I love that map- especially the first one. Ah, the tigers of Africa. On the other hand, I wonder if the size of Africa is not a bit of a Red Herring? Maybe it just goes to show that "Africa", like "Asia" or "India", is primarily a geographical term, and one cannot write of the problems of Africa or their solution. Botswana may be more similar to Taiwan (say) while Algeria's problems may be more like Iraq's...

I could not agree more on that. Development economics (and public policy which is tailored based on those theories) has suffered from the "best-practice" or "one-size-fits-all" approach to governance and policy making. There are enough examples from across the globe to show that there are no "grand narratives" to solving the challenge of poverty eradication and development. What works in one context may fail badly in another.
